Whorls "Demo"

Perishing from the same malady that affects their fellow country mates, Hexis and other-newly acts like Ajuna (from whom i already talked about here) are Whorls. Whorls started as a "non-serious" sideproject to Putrifier by the two guitarists Emil and Mads in late 2011. But as Putrifier was dissolved in the beginning of 2012, Whorls became a full band. All five members, with the same approach to the music.

Hailing from Denmark, Whorls are a new band that is now starting to take its first steps on the post-black-chaotic-sludge-metal scene. These guys drink from a lot of different influences, but the most obvious are the influences from Celeste, The Secret or even Altar of Plagues. The band presents itself, for now, with only two themes: "Irreversible" a spiral of an authentic blackness that it is ingrained to the bone and lashes some serious blackened riffs with its powerful core with some hints of a more progressive sludge so characteristic in bands like Celeste, but at the same time it possesses, on the second half of the track, some massive yet sharp sections reminding me a bit of the riffs living in the "777" saga from Blut Aus Nord. It's almost inevitable talking about Whorls without mentioning these two bands, Celeste and Hexis. First, Celeste, who were practically the precursors of this kind of sound, this plethora of flesh melting blackened sludge that erodes deeply into to our bones. Second, Hexis, being countrymen of this band, with whom they have already shared stage with, such mental image of this joint venture is completely devastating in my mind, just thinking that if there was someone who came out of that show in one piece and lived to tell about it, and for being a copy, well i don't like to use the word "copy" i think it's not fair to use it on Hexis, because they took that "Celeste sound" and give it their unique and innovative sound, but what i'm trying to say here is that Whorls also share that sonority. In the second track, "Sitgma" we are immediately dragged in that chaotic wave of sound, which through repetitive riffs, crushes us completely. It is a very short range track but at the same time it is devastating. The tracks presented by Whorls are dark and very dense, so dense that they become almost suffocating and rarely leave us a little breathing room. Whorls are another brilliant sample of what Northern Europe has to offer and judging by the quality of this sample, i look forward to hear much more from this young band. The Demo will be out soon through Bookhouse Records. Meanwhile you can stream and listen to the tracks on the Whorls Bandcamp. Keep an eye on this one.

Hellvetron "Death Scroll Of Seven Hells and It's Infernal Majesties"

Spewing from the Mouth of Hell, Hellvetron's debut full-length ritual emerges through the threshold into a manifestation of obscure hell psalms of death. "Death Scroll Of Seven Hells And Its Infernal Majesties" will be a tribute to the Qliphothic Tree of Death, Seven Hells, and it's infernal hierarchy. This release will be a curse on all who dare to possess this unholy relic. Praise the ten horns upon the seven headed beast. This is the intro presenting the debut full-length of Hellvetron, a band formed by two members of Nyogthaeblisz. Hellvetron passed the Demo phase, "Ceremonial Crucifixion", launched back in 2005 by Satanic Skinhead Propaganda but now these guys have joined the ranks of Hells Headbangers Records. "Death Scroll Of Seven Hells And Its Infernal Majesties" is a conceptual album that focus on the Qliphothic Tree of Death, Seven Hells, and it's infernal hierarchy, and that's precisely what each track carries, the unholy black flag of blasphemy with each title written in blood. Although i must confess this album didn't blew me away on the first listen, it carries a very dense and phantasmagoric atmosphere, so dense you can almost smell the sulphur along each track. Always filled with some creepy atmosphere on the background, the sound is deep as if it was recorded on the deepest catacombs of Hell. Imagine a more slow, doom-ish version of Goat Molestor or a more demonic version of Necros Christos (is that possible by the way?). No matter what this is a good death metal album, i really missed listening to something with such a maleficent personality as this one. You can buy it here

Lord Mantis "Pervertor"

One of the most expected albums for this year is "Pervertor" from Lord Mantis. This super group that features members of Nachtmystium and Indian created a black beast beauty with this. "Pervertor", with an amazing artwork by the great Justin Bartlett, introduces us 7 tracks in 46 minutes of some punishing blackened sludge. Charlie Fell’s voice in "Pervertor" it's just like thorns in our brain while we are consistently punished with mantodean riffs that will crawl up our spine and carve into our flesh. To be honest i was expecting something really heavy and dirty with this one, maybe it's me... I'm getting more and more demanding with music. It took a few listens for it to get under my skin but now it's there, and it just won't leave so soon. Buy it here. You know this is absolutely recommended here in the Haxan's cave.. now go listen Goddamn-it!

Tempest "Solace" EP

Fuck yes! Tempest are back with some brand new tracks, and amazing ones! "Solace" EP, delivers two great songs, simply called "Solace I" and "Solace II". "Passages" was one of the best releases i heard back in 2010 and it's awesome to see that the band has not softened, instead they deliver two bursts of energetic dark hardcore tracks that, i hope, are the thrust for their new full length... hopefully this year. Support these guys and their Distro (who kindly put this one up for free) by buying something here.

Embrace of Thorns "Praying for Absolution"

Another release that maybe passed unnoticed through many people is the latest Embrace of Thorns's "Praying for Absolution" released last year. With it, Embrace of Thorns, continue their path to total devastation, delivering 13 tracks of some of the best Black/Death made out there. I must tell you that this is no "Atonement Ritual", even the artwork isn't as cute, but don't get me wrong, this album sweats more blackness, darkness than its predecessor. Another thing in this album is the amount of interludes, it can be cool at a first auditions but after hearing it for quite some time, we tend to skip them to the real deal, the songs. Nuclear War Now has some interesting versions of this album so check them out here.

Katechon "Demo" Tape

Here is another sweet find i made on Bandcamp a few weeks ago. Katechon, come from Trondheim, Norway. This is their Demo Tape that features three tracks of this awesome moldy Death Metal with some Thrash, Crust and Black influences. Besides that typical Demo sound, the songs have this occult and dark hidden face that will unfold along the music, although the Demo is short, it's pure concentrated goodness. These guys are preparing their first 7'' that, as they promise, it will be darker and more twisted than this Demo Tape. I really hope so, 'cause that's exactly the sort of things i like. Follow them thru their Facebook. Check them out below.

Teitanblood "Purging Tongues" EP

Oh yeah... here is finally new Teitanblood material. "Purging Tongues" consists of a one 15 minute track EP. Here you will get it all, a super long intro, instrumental sections and most of all... a whirlwind of devastation. With an artwork that matches perfectly what you'll hear in "Purging Tongues", Teitanblood continue their path to bestial havoc. Too bad it features one track only, we want more! Pendejos!! You can buy this here although there more places where you can find it, don't be lazy and just Google it.

Abaton

Where the hell did these guys came from? Now here is a great surprise for this nearly ended year, from Italy arrives Abaton. They have just released their debut entitled "Hecate" through the label Lo Fi Creatures. And as they say on their Facebook page:
The characteristics of the sounds are a mixture of obscure and gloomy doom and sludge, with powerful harcore openings and dreary references to black. The ultimate purpose of the band is to create dark and meditative atmospheres, alternating with malice and anger, until to scratch the most introspective and oniric side of every individual.
Abaton plays an awesome blend of blackened sludge metal,  think Altar Of Plagues-meets-Tombs-meets-The Secret, and add an extra dose of heavy bleakness, get the picture? This band is relatively young, formed in 2010, i presume they skipped also the Demo phase, head straight into this dark vortex that is "Hecate". This album exudes darkness in every single note.. it's filthy HEAVY. For a first full-length, these guys have thrown the bar pretty high, so high i was caught with surprise with this... as the first notes start in "My Helvete" i get a "Holy shiiiiiiit..." cringing in fear in my head. The sound is good, the voice is great and the production of it all, is just awesome. The best way to picture "Hecate" would be like a sudden dark cloud that appears out of nowhere, the air thickens and Darkness overcomes the Earth.. life as we know it, is about to end. This is really, really good. The formula of combining Black Metal, Sludge or Doom isn't new... the success of that formula lies in the final result, add some interesting details to that and voilá! I can assure you that Abaton holds the key to this very unique formula. One of the best revelations of the year. Buy it here before it gets sold out, i already got mine, and it's a-w-e-s-o-m-e. Highly Recommended!

Ossarivm

It's time to demonstrate some of my patriotism and share some of the best that is made here in Portugal. This came as a request from the underground label Latrina do Chifrudo (in english it means something like Latrine of the Horned One) and little did they know that we speak the same language. Ossarivm is a one man band hailing from Porto, Portugal and in this EP "Emanation" we are unblessed to have 3 themes forged by the horned beast itself. Three darkened ritualistic songs to summon the Lord of Darkness. Indeed some of the best material ever made here... worship the beast! 666!!

Höllenlärm

A blaze in the northern sky that follows the voice of blood to a blackened sea of Sabbath! Drawing influences of Doom, Black Metal and Crust Punk, Höllenlärm create a crushing soundscape that is familiar, yet fresh and intriguing at the same time. Höllenlärm consist of veterans from the Philadelphia scene, collaborating to create a highly original, unique listening experience that is "Hellish Noise". For fans of Amebix, Darkthrone, Drudkh, Eyehategod and Tragedy. Buy here.

Hexis

Are you in for the most vicious, blackened and torturous blend of hardcore and metal you ever heard in your miserable life? Here is the brand new Hexis 7'' entitled simply "X". This is heavy, heavy, heavy.. like if the doors of Hell have been opened and all the demons inside have been unleashed upon the Earth. Impressive stuff here.. Highly Recommended! The band had the pleasure to release this as "Name You Price" at their Bandcamp. But they really deserve a buck or two at least. Show some love to their hate.

The Austrasian Goat & Hallowed Butchery

The USA-based progressive doom soloist Hallowed Butchery teams up with the French funeral doom soloist The Austrasian Goat for a monumental collaborative split 10″ based upon the moral stance of self-reliance, popularized and preached by the Transcendentalist movement of the 19th-century. In a world of consumerism, conformity, religious-brainwashing, and political bullshit, these two musical geniuses refuse to merely follow the pack. This is reflected in both their lyrical content, and in their approach to their music, which is performed in solitude, and which often defies categorization. The Austrasian Goat begins the split with two songs of dark, minimalistic, funeral doom reminiscent of Ahab, Celestiial, and Nortt, but with an approach all his own. On the second of the two dirges, Ryan Fairfield of Hallowed Butchery makes a guest appearance. Side two features one epic song from Hallowed Butchery. His song is different from anything he has done in the past – reminiscent of Hawkwind-on-a-bad-acid-trip with Black Sabbath chugging cough syrup, while My Bloody Valentine snorts a mishmash of pills. The song features guest appearances from Julien Louvet of The Austrasian Goat and Brad Bolduc of Terrible Old Man. In a nutshell, “Songs of Self-Reliance and Solitude” is music for the forward-thinking, the individualist, the anarchist, the artist, and the metal-head in us all. Buy it here, european friends can grab this here.

Nocturnal Blood

Emerging from chaos comes Nocturnal Blood, a young one-man band playing straight-forward Black/Death Metal in the bestial and occult traditions of the past. The music bursts forth from the stereo with abyssic tremolo-picked riffs which sound as if they are coming from within the depths of a distant tomb. The riffs create the sense of darkness and morbidity that many bands attempt to create but only result in a forced and hollow effort. The music of Nocturnal Blood is far from forced and carries a bold and honest feeling, hitting the listener deep within. No bullshit, no hype, no shit.. just True Tradition of Old motherfuckers!! Grab this here. Meanwhile check this out first, to get in the full spirit for this release. Fuck, now that would give a fuckin' evil intro.

Midnight

As the clock strikes for Midnight.. and it's time for a satanic ritual. And the smell of Black Heavy Metal is in the thick of the night. Bow down before Midnight's "Satanic Royalty". After nearly a decade of EPs and splits finally it arrived, "Satanic Royalty", is the first full-length of the black metal rockers Midnight. It's both a distillation of first-wave Black Metal magic and an extension into harder-rocking territories rampant with lust, filth, and sleaze. The name Midnight has been a cult one for years now, but here they prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt! The perfect soundtrack to summon the Devil. Highly Recommended! Buy it here.

Dispirit

It's dark as none could imagine. Dispirit "Rehearsal at Oboroten" is atmospheric black metal at its best. It's the music we need when all's wrong. It's the new project of John Gossard, the man behind the guitar of Weakling and Asunder. And it's Xasthur-meets-Khanate somewhere but you'll find hundred other and better references I'm sure.  Enjoy this drowning in horror.

Ruins

Ruins is a blasphemous blackened thrash outfit that draws their influences from old-school acts such as Darkthrone, Voivod, Hellhammer and Bathory. But while there are quite literally hundreds of thousands of bands within today’s metal scene that draw upon the same said influences, there are few that manage to successfully capture the vibe and the sound of the above mentioned acts with such authenticity and energy. “Chambers of Perversion” was originally released in 2010 as a 10” vinyl limited to 250 copies and sold out almost immediately. The record contained 8 songs of Black fucking Speed Metal and one hell of artwork done by, who else.. Mark Riddick. This has got to be one of the sickest covers i've seen. Buy it here.

Fleshpress

One of the most expected albums this year for me.. Fleshpress "Acid Mouth Strangulation". These Finnish are back with more of their home-brewed hypnotic suffocating sludge madness from the northern swamps. On their fifth full length album Fleshpress evolve from their days as a rough, gritty metal machine towards the unknown. These three long tracks ebb and flow with an organic pulse, from slowly meditative passages to black swamp-sludge metal. An unsettling but oddly beautiful experience starting with that amazing cover artwork. Buy it here.

Void Meditation Cult

Damn... in a couple of days, the amount of awesome releases is just mind-blowing. Here is another one i eager to hear in its whole, Void Meditation Cult's "Sulfurous Prayers".

Void Meditation Cult rises from the blight and darkness with a ritual offering for all who worship at the altar of the blighting angel. "Sulfurous Prayers" recalls the iniquitous spirit of early Demoncy and Samael with four exaltations of devil worship, death and disharmony. The next verse of the serpent mass litany begins here... Be sure to grab this one fast here, this k7 will fly while the Devil scratches his eye.

Heresiarch

Heresiarch is a New Zealand act involving a few of the Diocletian guys and a few who work exclusively within this project. "Hammer of Intransigence" is their second release, following a brief demo earlier in the year, and I was immediately struck by the excellent cover art. Heresiarch’s brand of black/death decimates life and "Hammer of Intransigence" is the soundtrack that foreshadows a destructive and apocalyptic future. Six songs = 22 minutes; "Hammer of Intransigence" is an oppressive, hate-filled display documenting the bleak outcome of man. Be prepared. And also, if you like what you hear, support the band for their upcoming releases in the future, buy the EP here.

Truppensturm

"Salute to the Iron Emperors" This is the second full-length album from german Black/Death metal band Truppensturm. The production on this album is ridiculously thick and heavy: the bass and drums are way in the bottom register, the guitars are down-tuned to hell, and even the vocals are a belch that barely breaks the surface. The whole album is practically a single wall of low-end. It reminds me a bit of Diocletian's "Doom Cult".

"Salute to the Iron Emperors" is so monolithic and crushing that it takes a few listens to fully sink down to riff-level, this record is chock full of headbang-inducing blasphemy-style riffs and relentless drum lines. The overall effect is a lot like being run over a steamroller for half an hour, though the band throws in a few samples, spoken-word sections, and slower parts to break the mood now and again. This record may be unrelenting, but nothing about it is unconsidered, and there's not an ounce of filler to be heard here; even the intro and outro are classic. One of the best DM albums that came out in 2010. Get into it
