Failure Ritual "Secret Hoard"; "Total Weakness"; "Ineptitude".

If you're an avid follower of my blog, you'll probably remember when I posted about Failure Ritual back in 2012. Well, he's back. And it seems he has been busy, I mean... very busy, since he delivers not one, nor two but... three new whole releases, three! And what can you expect? More of that impenetrable noisy, entrancing blackened doom? Blackened drone? It's hard to classify Failure Ritual's sound. Whatever that may be, it just grabs you and sucks you down to the bottomless pits of Hell. Check it out.

Sareth Den " Arcadian Wanderer Demo"

Sareth Den is a enigmatic act from Dahlonega, Georgia whose sound can be described as dark ambient drone as we can hear in the opening track "Wanderer Through Static Fields", an obscure track that leads us into the most abstract and hazy corners of our mind. But he doesn't simply closes its circle there and also branches to some black metal like in "Sunlight Burns My Eyes", where we are feasted with this thick harsh wall of black metal noise sound until we are thrown back to another complete different record in "Riverside Evening Suite", a more dreamy and atmospheric fifteen minute track that lifts up our soul by letting some rays of light into this dark colored pallet. One of the members plays in the ambient/drone band Outer Gods, whom I've talked about too here on Forever Cursed. Please check both bands out.

Best of 2013 - Part I: The Albums

Time to bring you the first part of what are my favorite albums released in 2013. A lot of different stuff here. From the haunting and minimalistic landscapes from The Haxan Cloak to the coldest Winter blizzards with Battle Dagorath to the monochromatic post punk of Weekend. So, without further notice here it goes, Part I of Forever Cursed Best Albums of 2013. Enjoy!

40. The Haxan Cloak "Excavation"

Who said that electronic music can't be creepy? The Haxan Cloak proves that with "Excavation", an authentic creepy sonic voyage that sounds more like the soundtrack of a horror movie. Great textures here. The perfect listen for a long night of work.

39. Svarte Greiner "Black Tie"

Svarte Greiner, one of my favorite artist in this field, returns with an ambitious album featuring two tracks only. "Black Tie" introduces us two long tracks creating one of the most sinister atmospheres (just like The Haxan Cloak) you will hear this year. Not an easy listen, I must confess.

38. The Sun Through a Telescope "I Die Smiling"

Now, I wasn't very familiar with this band. The Sun Through A Telescope is a one man drone/doom recording project from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. "I Die Smiling" soon proved to be a very essential album on my playlist. It's drone, sludge, ambient, experimental metal. All tracks are really different from each other and it's amazing how the whole album works as a whole. Really superb job. Listen the whole thing here.

37. Nhor "Within The Darkness Between The Starlight"

Now here is an album/artist that passed under the radar of many people out there. Lack of promotion of not, Nhor is one of U.K's finest black metal acts nowadays. "Within The Darkness Between The Starlight" is to me, the best work of Nhor so far. Amazing dreamy landscapes mixed with really passionate and sincere black metal that leads us to the deepest ancient forests of Britannia . What an amazing journey. Buy it here or here.

36. FIN "Fated By Will & Iron"

Another, let's call it, underrated release that really caught my attention was U.S's  Fin with their debut full-length "Fated By Will & Iron". This band simply delivers some really high quality black metal music. Although nothing groundbreaking here, I really ended up by getting hooked by their incisive and vicious black metal sound. Listen to it here.

35. Arckanum "Fenris Kindir"

Arckanum, what else need to be said about Arckanum? "Fenris Kindir" is the artist's eight full-length, dedicated to Lycanthropia. Although nowadays his sound is quite different from his older stuff, on this specific release I ended by really liking it a lot. Besides having that solid and furious black metal sound it also has a that really mean punk, crusty vibe attached to some of the tracks. Like for example "Hatarnir" and "Angrbða". And some really awesome interludes like "Vargøld" where I imagine a huge werewolf congregation taking place in the most darken forests of Sweden. Try for yourself here.

34. Throne Of Katarsis "The Three Transcendental Keys"

This year we were gifted by Throne Of Katarsis with a conceptual album called "The Three Transcendental Keys". Featuring three tracks (one dedicated to each key) having each one more than 10 minutes each. It really sounds like it was all recorded live in some old and decrepit church and recorded in one take. The result is an amazingly obscure and occult atmosphere with three tracks buried deep in the most intoxicating of the sulfurous of fogs. Creepy.

33. Lluvia "Premonicion De Guerra"

One more month and I would have to keep this release for the Best of 2014 List. But luckily, it arrived just in time. For those who don't know, Lluvia is the new project risen from the ashes of Blucht Der Nacht and The Rain In Endless Fall. Lluvia's "Premonicion De Guerra", delivers some of the best black metal I've had the pleasure to hear this year. Great atmospheres, really dark, cold and evil. Really a must-have for all black metal fans. Available here.

32. Mourning Cloak "No Visible Light"

Gathering folks from Braveyoung, Torch Runner and Graf Orlock, Mourning Cloak is a doom supergroup that delivered one of the heaviest albums of this year. "No Visible Light" features three tracks of some really heavy and thick doom. I really dig the atmosphere. Check it out here. Doooooommmm!!

31. Fell Voices "Regnum Saturni"

There isn't much that needs to be said about one of the most known and influential cascadian black metal bands tho walk this Earth. "Regnum Saturni" is a hypnotic, dense, chaotic whirlwind journey like I've never heard before. Besides the music here being colossal, the whole artwork matches perfectly. A must-have. Listen here.

30. Djevel "Besatt Av Maane Og Natt"

Djevel, a supergroup formed by members/ex-members of Koldbrann, Nettlecarrier, Enslaved, Kvelertak, and others. This is another album that really caught my attention due to it's superb quality. I wasn't totally aware who was behind this supergroup, to be honest, I've only found about it recently. But that wasn't the main factor why I got into this. "Besatt Av Maane Og Natt" is filled with great tracks, extremely well performed, good production. Norway wins again.

29. Cosmic Church "Ylistys"

Now here is an album that I almost let it escape. I really didn't payed the right attention when it came out but whenever I found the name "Cosmic Church" and "Ylistys" together, people were all saying great things about it, so I gave it a try. And I loved it. It may not stick immediately after a first listen (the whole album has 1 hour and 16 minutes length) but patience has its rewards and this album is definitely a "grower". The more I listen to it, the more I love it. Once again great black metal, great atmospheres, great music. A majestic album. You can listen the whole album here. Buy it here (although there are several copies spread out through many distros).

28. Battle Dagorath "Cursed Storm of Ages"

Battle Dagorath never ceases to amaze me. I featured the band also in my personal Best of List in 2011 if my memory isn't wrong. This double album is way more superior and ambitious than 2011's "Ancient Wraith". What you see on the cover of "Cursed Storm of Ages" is precisely what you get inside. The most cold of the coldest blizzards of black metal. Really powerful and epic tracks like "Cloud, Shadow, Earth & Flesh", "Processional Across Dreamed Landscapes"and "Awakened by the Spell of the Wind" are just a few, the whole thing is bloody amazing. And those vocals... damn, they give me the chills. Once again Battle Dagorath did it. Buy it here.

27. Wolvserpent "Perigaea Antahkart"

Another bloody amazing trip is Wolvserpent's "Perigaea Antahkarana". During almost 1 hour and half we are transported into this dreamy dimension where Wolvserpent numbs our senses with their magic and mystical music. Amazing fusion of atmospheres. A really impressive album. Listen to it here and buy it here.

26. Inter Arma "Sky Burial"

From the same label as Wolvserpent, their buddies Inter Arma also delivered one hell of a album. "Sky Burial" is Inter Arma's opus, their "Black Album". Extremely well performed sludge metal splattered with some hints of black metal and psychedelia. All wrapped in a stupendous production enhancing Inter Arma's amazing capability of making what they do best. This is an album that we will never grow tired of listen. Just listen to the track "The Long Road Home".. really. These guys really gave us a lesson on how it's supposed to be made. A slap in the face without a hand. Bri-lli-ant. Listen/Buy

25. Rosetta "The Anaesthete"

Rosetta is one of those bands that I already know for a long time, long time when I started to listen to all those post-metal bands like Isis, Mouth Of The Architect, Giant and others. I enjoy their sound but soon fell into boredom. But this album changed that. "The Anaesthete" is a brilliant piece of work. It hooked me up from the beginning to the end. And made me change opinion about them. Heavy post metal with great post rock influences giving us some really amazing atmospheres. The band was extremely kind to share the album for free at their Bandcamp, although this is really worth picking up since it will look awesome as hell on your turntable. Get it here.

24. Celeste "Animale(s)"

One of the most anticipated albums for this year was "Animale(s)" from French band Celeste. After a three year silence "Animale(s)" marks the return of this influential band. A colossal double album introducing that unmistakeable sound that we all know by now as being the trademark of the band. Once again Celeste proves us that their still master in their game. Listen and buy this beast of an album here.

23. True Widow "Circumambulation"

An album that accompanies me through these cold and dark Winter days is True Widow's "Circumambulation". Pioneers of the genre "stonergaze" like it's been called, True Widow have conquered fans inside and out of the metal territory. To me, "Circumambulation" is their gloomiest album to date. Feels good to slow down sometimes. Listen to it here.

22. Beastmilk "Climax"

Kvohst and his crew have done a terrific job with "Climax". This album is a total drug. Since day one those refrains are echoing in my head (Nuuuu-cleeeee-aaaaaaarr Wiinnn-teeeeee-eeeeeerr). Really, this album should bring a sticker on its cover alerting people to its addiction. If this was more mainstream, then every track would be an amazing hit single Apocalyptic post punk at its best. Listen to it here.

21. Weekend "Jinx"

I usually listen to a lot of different stuff as I'm pretty sure you do on that side. It all depends on the mood. Weekend are a band that I've been following for quite some time and "Jinx" is a great album that shows us an even more mature Weekend. This album is phenomenal, I listen to it almost every week. Great catchy tunes holding that post-punk vibe, great bass and drum complicity, great vocals. You can get it here and listen to some samples as well.

Download the compilation HERE.
(Sorry for the weight of the file, but with tracks clocking over 10 minutes or more what do you expect?)
Part II coming soon!

Enjoy!

Outer Gods "The Mountains Den" Demo

The duo Outer Gods, formed by The Flail and The Wrathe,  come from Atlanta and "The Mountains Den" is their first Demo, introducing two tracks of atmospheric drone noise. When it comes to this genre you either accept it, embracing it while diving into this abyss of never ending riff, or you simply just deny. There's no middle ground in this genre. People usually avoid this because they thing it's boring, repetitive, etc... What's so good about a 10 minute track that consists in only one never ending scabrous riff? It exists merely for one reason: to separate the "wheat from the chaff".

And while i listened to this Demo i kinda felt that. I mean, i know many bands/acts that sound like this and the first impression i got automatically as i heard "The Mountains Den" was precisely that: "Ok, here we go. Another Sunn O))) clone..." But the more i  drowned in those repetitive waves of noise, the more i felt that this project had a soul of it's own. It's true and an undeniable fact that drone tracks like this don't owe much to rhythm and evolution. But instead they lead us into this state of psychedelic trance, never knowing what might be next.

The track "The Mountains Den" takes us into this deep sense of numbness as it grows more and more near the end and then it vanishes without a trace. It feels almost as a sentiment. It could be Anger, Fear, whatever... something that grows suddenly within you for at least 10 minutes. The second track "Tir na Bas" dwells into more atmospheric environment, beginning with screams of pain.. or pleasure. It seems taken out from a dark horror movie where the characters are performing some kind of occult ritual. That's the power of this genre. It allows us to create these cinematic scenarios in our mind. You feel like giving a try, head straight to the Outer Gods Bandcamp and grab this one, and while you're at, check also The Wrathe's ambient sideproject, Sareth Den. Not recommended for those weak at head.

Necro Deathmort "The Colonial Script"

And now for something a little bit different.

Dingy, gritty sounds that creeps, lurks, builds, elongates, teases, and piledrives you in the face with switchblade beats and apocalyptic crescendos. No wonder that they have supported Ulver, Shining, and d.USK among others. Over the course of the nine tracks on "The Colonial Script", you can expect to hear grainy, doomy ambience, whirlpools of 23hz low-end scuzz, acidburn waspsynth buzz, thudding and juddering feedback-ridden roars, distorted nihilistic yelps, doomscaping visceral breaks, buzzsawing smackstrung loops, all seamlessly weaved together in a brutal but beautiful tapestry. This duo consists of AJ Cookson and Matthew Rozeik, that somehow managed to merge the disparate worlds of black and doom metal and hard-edged electronic/ambient music have put together another brilliant combination of the two, sounding like no one else in the process, in the best possible way.

I must confess i'm not the biggest fan on the use of digital/electronic devices on metal, like digital drumming, keyboards, etc. I usually have a tendency to look away and escape from those kinda bands/albums. I just like things simple and fully live by the formula (G+B+D) = guitar(s), bass, drums. The use of electronics on metal?? The first thing that comes into my mind is nu (yuck) metal.

Except..

Except... if their aim is only to enhance and create the most darkened atmosphere you'll ever face. That's precisely what happened as i heard this album, Necro Deathmort's "The Colonial Script". I was almost preparing to skip this album as the first digital beats spread all over the opening track "Imperial", but something made me hold in order to hear more of it. The reward came immediately near the end of the track, and on the following track "Led to the Water". Heavy, crushing riffs opened their way through a winding path and draw some mysterious space forms that lurked in this spacial horror. While listening to this, as i look to the artwork of the cover, instead of skulls, demons or other esoteric/occult imagery i get an astronaut. And immediately my imagination goes beyond this earth and into the most obscure corners of the Galaxy. And as a game nerd, it clicked: "Dead Space... this is the fucking perfect Dead Space soundtrack!". Game nerds will feel me on this one here.

The core of this album is somewhere between dark electronic ambient stretching it to a most aggressive metal territory, filled with pummeling digital drum beats, crushing guitar distortion and very neurotic screaming vocals as heard on "Led to the Water", "Arrows", "Theme From Escape" and "Insecto!". For me the best tracks are indeed the heavy ones where guitar prevails, but on the other hand i also dig that dark and sinister electronic atmospheric tracks. No matter the path, the result is the same: Darkness. So, if you're seeking something different, stretch out your mind and get into this dark horrific sci-fi soundtrack brought by this interesting duo. It has became my late addiction while working late at night, just with a very dim light on the desk. The CD is available here and it's meant to be played at maximum volume.

And suddenly i'm feeling the urge to play Dead Space again...

Profond Barathre & Rorcal & Malvoisie

Greetings! Things are running a little bit slow here on FxC but i have not forgotten all you guys & gals out there, so today i bring you one of my latest addictions, this collaborative release between Profond Barathre & Rorcal & Malvoisie. 3 bands, 3 tracks, 3 approaches. In the aim of creating something special (or uncreating for others), this collaborative work has been a very long process to visualize something more than just a gathering of songs with single identities. But rather to shape a story through 45 minutes of darkness, atmospheric, violent and hysterical waves of sound and screams. Opening with Profond Barathre, followed by Rorcal and finalized by Malvoisie. 3 chapters to be discovered in one straight listening. I'm unfamiliar with the work of Profond Barathre and Malvoisie, i only know Rorcal from this triad. Although i love Rorcal to death, definitely one of the best sludge/doom acts coming out of Europe, i still believe that this band isn't getting the attention they really deserve, seriously, they have done some amazing work, and they just keep on getting better and better, and proving that is their track on this release... simply amazing. Rorcal is one amazing beast of its kind. They have done a lot of hard work, carrying a very praising DIY attitude, so the least you can do is support them by buying something. You won't regret it, trust me.

This collaborative release is available for free, although i strongly advise you to get a physical copy here. It's limited to 200 copies and released by their hand through CALOFROR Records. Highly recommended.

Immemorial "The Downfall of Astral Radiance"

Immemorial is a brand new project coming from France. It features some members from bands like HKY, Eibon, Comity and Arms Of Ra. Initially formed by D. (main responsible for astral radiation, keyboards and sounds of dark matter) this collective have drawn "The Downfall of Astral Radiance" that will be paired with the dark ambient project Leben Ohne Licht Kollektiv, which features I. luciferia of the band Reverence and Ende (that i talked about some days ago here on FxC about his amazing debut) in a split release cd entitled "Quantum of Abstract Physics".

Described by the band as "total terror funeral drone", Immemorial present us an amazing sonic experience throughout half an hour. Feeling like almost an out-of-body experience, "The Downfall of Astral Radiance" starts off with a kind of atmosphere that it would suit perfectly into a terror-sci-fi-thriller movie like "Alien". This whole spacial atmosphere takes our mind far until we hear nothing but this electronic, industrial, dark ambient sounds. Dark and cold sounds that wraps us in about 5 minutes until the first droning riff crushes our skull and opens the gates of sheer space horror. From there on the tracks develops into several moments distributed between some peaks of more vigorous and crushing doom riffs and the dark atmospheric side of drone/ambient music,  culminating in this claustrophobic environment of pure terror and darkness. Certainly a release you must not miss. Follow this project steps here and visit their blog, where you will find more info about this awesome project. Hopefully the cd will be available this summer, and there will be three labels producing it Cold Dark Matter Records, Frozen Wings Records and Le Crépuscule du Soir Productions. It features a great artwork by Dehnsora. Could not recommend this more. Check it out below.

Failure Ritual "Failure Ritual"

Now this is some serious kvlt case. A dark, mysterious and odd find was this release by Failure Ritual, from whom i've heard nothing before and can't seem to find any info on the web. Nevertheless, this release is really from what nightmares are made of. Three tracks of buzzing droning and noisy black metal that will corrupt our soul almost for one whole hour. As i started to hear the title track "Failure Ritual" i fell into this trance and feel  like i'm tele-ported directly to the Dark Ages, right into the set of one of Bosch's paintings of Hell. The power that music sometimes have of making us creating these eery, fascinating scenarios in our head is truly amazing. And with Failure Ritual i can go there any time. The atmosphere is heavy and hypnotizing. At some points you can hear a agonizing voice breaking through this malefic barrier of noise, almost as a cry for help before being devoured by the bowels of Hell. If you would like some comparisons the only thing i can relate is something like a crossbreed between the industrial sludge of Halo, the dark ambient of In Slaughter Natives and the whirlwind of noisy and experimental black metal of Sutekh Hexen. The result is something really demolishing. Recommended strongly only to the fans of the bands mentioned.

Svarte Greiner "Kappe"

It's been a while since i've posted some ambient, droning stuff. I guess it comes often, depending of my state of mind. In need of this "numbness" into my mind, i recently picked up Svarte Greiner's "Kappe". Svarte Greiner is a dark ambient project by Erik K Skodvin (full name, Erik Knive Skodvin), half of the Norwegian duo Deaf Center, formed in 2005 in Oslo.

At a first impression you might wonder what does it sound like. I can tell you it sounds exactly like it looks, just look at the artwork. The whole environmental palette on this album is just dark, dark, dark. "Kappe" is not an easy album for the common easy listener. But if you dare to look deeper into this sonic abyss, go ahead, continue reading.

the set is opened with "Tunnel Of Love", a blurry swell of dense tones and funereal howling before eventually throwing in a metallic clamour that cuts through the murk in a brilliantly discordant fashion. Disfigured guitars hum and fray in the background, but it's not until "Where Am I?" that more substantial drone developments take hold. The piece evolves from a sequence of glacial tones that eventually dissipate into the background, transformed into what might pass for demonic whalesong emanating from a misty fjord. Next comes the intriguingly titled "Candle Light Dinner Actress", the longest of the four pieces here and easily the most astonishing, hovering weightlessly over sixteen minutes of strained harmonics and searing overtones that will leave you gasping for breath. As is often the case with Svarte Greiner releases, it's not always easy to tell what instruments and sound sources are being tapped for these unearthly noises, but there's surely some deconstructed electric guitar in there somewhere and some heavily cloaked saxophone tones. Wrapping up the album, "Last Light" makes for a fittingly elegiac closing piece, populated by thick, noxious vapours, disembodied found sounds and strings bowed so coarsely and heavily that they begin to take on a knotted, thorny quality. There's a real air of restraint about "Kappe", and it's an album loaded with dark energy, always poised ambiguously between outright aural punishment and an impenetrably black chasm. A masterclass in organic, artful gloom, "Kappe" comes with the highest possible recommendation. You can buy this here.

Tropic of Cancer "The End of All Things"

By now, if you follow this blog daily you might noticed that i dig this kind of stuff i bring you next. Tropic of Cancer's "The End of All Things" is basically a compilation of songs from their early Demos and EPs. Tropic Of Cancer sounds like a drugged instrumental version of Joy Division that with echoing hypnotic rhythms, draws us through tight dark corridors, into their own private world, where few are invited to enter. For fans of The Soft Moon, Suicide, Joy Division, that kind of dark-goth stuff...

Fantômas

This is by far my all time favorite Fantômas release. "Delirium Cordia" features an insane 1 hour epic track called "Surgical Sound Specimens From the Museum of Skin". It's kinda like a train, its wagons are all different but at the same time, they all coexist in a perfect harmony with each other. It's like a freakin' soundtrack to a nightmare. A soundtrack to a collaborative movie between Pier Paolo Pasolini, Dario Argento and Jodorowsky. I saw them live when this came out. It was one hell of a show.. the best part was when Lombardo hit a gong with a pineapple. Brilliant.

Surachai

A naked person with a goat skull in a small room with candles in the background like some sort of ritual?? I like it!

Today i bring you new full-length od Chicago’s one-man black metal/ambient/doom/electronic audio nightmare Surachai, “To No Avail” is a stark and relentless journey to the center of an experimental, black metal earth poised on the brink of destruction. A cathartic, guitar-driven manfiesto ripped from the heart of a digital underground, Surachai’s “To No Avail,” elevates the US Black Metal scene to new heights - and smashes the conceptions of trve/false mania upon your unsuspecting face. Highly Recommended for fans of Krallice, Deathspell Omega and even maybe some Blut Aus Nord fans. Available as a digital download and in a beautiful limited-run vinyl with the artwork made with pictures taken by Sarah Sitkin that you can buy here. Highly Recommended.

Rorcal & Solar Flare

After being locked down for 3 days in a humid basement, to write and record a collaborative track sounding as heavy as it could be with 2 basses, 3 guitars and supported by drums and vocals from the Mordor. The final result is at sight. A fierce collaboration between the belgian sludge doomsters Rorcal and Solar Flare. Basically Solar Flare brings cold and dark ambient themes, but if at a first listen you think it's dull wait until you hear the last collaborative song track with Rorcal... it will crush your skull. As said by the band itself:

"As concept and guideline, we found inspiration in the poem “La Ronde sous la Cloche”, taken from the book “Gaspard de la Nuit” and written by the french poet Aloysius Bertrand… although the legend says that this book was probably written by the devil himself. His text drags you into a world between nightmare, hallucination and darkness which we tried to reproduce musicaly."

All has been mastered again by Raph Bovey who produced the masterpiece "HLGBLS", the release is presented in a handmade digifile CDr format featuring tracks from Solar Flare and the collaborative song. Support this awesome band by buying their stuff here.

Hedorah

Taking it's name from the aerial pollution god that faced off against Godzilla in the Japanese psychedelic kaiju classic Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971), Hedorah is an industrial noise/doom/drone project consisting of James Keeler (Wilt) and Dan Hall. This beast, made of blackened doom metal, delivers over sickening downtuned guitar riffs that seemed to drift in and out of phase, smears of filthy electronic noise, and crushing monotonous drum machine beats. Not one ray of light, nor ounce of melody is anywhere to be found. Just plodding, utterly hypnotic, nauseatingly crushing industrial doom. Recommended for fans of Nadja, Gnaw Their Tongues, Moss.

Echthros

Echthros é um projecto de um one-man-band polaco. E este álbum, "Iyov",
ele descreve como: " The album merges dark ambient, drone doom metal and elements of orthodox choral music. ".

Altaar

Updated post!

Straight out of Norway, Altaar, takes us with "Dødsønske" (which means "Death Wish") through a journey between cold, dark and obscured ancient catacombs. Their sound can be described as a thick wall of a mixture between dark ambient, drone, doom with some hints of Black Metal. This is one of my favorite releases ever. This is just my sort of thing. This was one of the first posts here on FxC and since i got a high quality release, i decide to replace it by the other cassette rip. This way you can hear every noise popping out from every dark crack correctly. Although "Dødsønske" is remarkably awesome to let Altaar fall in the pit of Oblivion, these guys have got to release something new soon, really. Highly Recommended.

Nekrasov
